Dear friends. Are you Team Stripes, Team Spots, or Team Both? I vote for all three.
I like the opportunity to wear stripes and spots together, but one of the pieces needs to be small (a scarf or bag) for a small scale person like me (short).
In today's post I'm showing how striped t-shirts, a summer staple, are also brilliant to layer up in cold weather.
HORIZONTAL VERSUS VERTICAL STRIPES
First, let's talk horizontal v vertical stripes. Vertical stripes help the petite to look taller, but they're hard to find in trouser form. I had a pair from F&F, Tesco, (top pic) which made my legs look longer. Note that I'm wearing both stripes and spots!
Horizontal stripes, and in particular wider stripes, make the bust look bigger. As an inverted triangle (larger shoulders than hips), I should probably steer clear of horizontal stripes but I have quite a few, in the form of summer tops and jumpers/sweaters.
I started wearing horizontal stripes tops fairly recently. I studiously avoided them when there was a big craze around Breton tops - particularly from Boden - a few years ago. I'm still not convinced French women wear them.
Striped t- shirts are great layering pieces, I find, particularly when we're in a cold snap. Here I've layered a Breton top over a Kettlewell silky roll neck (light aqua) with their merino Marnie tank (bright navy) over the top.
I also like to wear a patterned blouse over a cosy jumper, knotting it at the waist. This Kettlewell blouse (old) has spots. Worn over Connie sweater in coral. My tights (Snag) match. This is a combination to remind me of spring.
Another layering look features a striped tee worn over another tee with a higher neckline. I don't like to expose my crepey chest and wouldn't wear the striped top on its own now. I added a retro dress (Etsy) and I'm wearing tights, but it's too cold for this outfit at present unless I added a thick long cardigan and opaque tights.
I found one of my "polka dots 2 ways " looks in the archive. This is an easy way to do it, and the principle applies to wearing two patterns together. If you choose patterns in the same colorway, it will always work.
Where are you in the stripes and spots debate? Do you like both, both together, or one or the other? Do tell in the comments.
These are the fabulous sites with whom I share my posts.
