Vegan Hair Products that Hydrate

Gail Hanlon of Is This Mutton tries out the HYDR-8 range of hair products from Vegamour

Dear friends.  If you're anything like me, you scrutinise hair care products to check their ingredients, while keen to find hair care solutions that work.

I was pleased to be invited to try a new range from well-known Vegan brand Vegamour. Not only are their products free of sulfates, parabens, silicones, gluten and artificial fragrance, but they're a good natural alternative to products which can give unwanted side effects.

The range I tried is called HYDR-8, formulated for those with dry, damaged hair.

My hair is normally quite strong and can put up with bad treatment. However my greed for highlights has resulted in dry ends and less shine.

I was gifted the HYDR-8 Full Routine kit.  Retailing at £168  (with discounts available on the website) this features Hydrate and Repair shampoo and conditioner, Leave-in conditioner, Deep Moisture Repair Mask and Weightless Repair Oil.

I started using the products over a month ago and am pleased with the results. My hair is definitely more shiny and less frizzled.

Appearance of the Products

The products look sophisticated and expensive with their gold and deep blush packaging. I liked the fresh, light jasmine scent of the shampoo and conditioner, and the way the bottles are opened and closed with a twist of the lid, making them easy to handle when you're in the shower.

The HYDR-8 range is based on amino acids and Karmatin™, a vegan keratin alternative. Normal keratin is not vegan. Marula and Moringa seed oil is an antioxidant blend that hydrates, reduces frizz and adds shine.

How I Used the Products

I used the shampoo and conditioner in the normal way. Once or twice a week in place of a conditioner, I used HYDR-8 Deep Moisture Repair Mask for a repairing treatment.

I then sprayed HYDR-8 Leave-In Conditioner for detangling, frizz reduction and heat protection.

The HYDR-8 Weightless Repair Oil is a recommended final step for all hair types, even fine and thin.

For me the strand out product was the leave-in conditioner.  Sometimes I'm too rushed to apply a conditioner after shampooing and I like a no-rinse conditioner.  This one was true in its claims of offering detangling and frizz reduction.

I didn't use the Weightless Oil very often: for me, with my newly shortened hair, it would be good as an overnight repair mask.  I will be using it on my holiday, smoothing it into my hair before sitting in the sun.  It's not that I didn't like the product but I have never really used oils on my hair before.  I would imagine it's excellent on long hair.

I took it with me when I had my hair cut and coloured this week.  Here my hairdresser Jodie is applying the Weightless Oil.  Her observation was to be careful as you spray as it is quite liquid and you can find you have more on your hair than you expected.

Research-based Results

Vegamour's research suggests that using HYDR-8 gives 72 hours of hair hydration and frizz reduction, up to 5x stronger hair strands after one use and up to 14x hydration after one use.

It's hard as an individual without a laboratory to confirm these results, but I know all too well when hair products leave my hair dry, lifeless and flat, and these products were right at the other end of the spectrum.  I'd happily carry on using them.

Disclosure: I was gifted with the HYDR-8 Full Routine kit in return for an honest review. Copy approval was neither sought nor given:  my editorial opinions are my own.

  1. Sounds very good. I also use vegan products, also on my skin. But my shampoo still makes my scalp itchy. Enjoy your holiday!
