11 Fast Ways to Update Your Look

 & WowOnWednesday

Gail Hanlon from Is This Mutton in lime green sequin top

Dear friends. It's a new season and the shops are trying to tempt us with their new autumn and winter collections. What are the most easy to wear trends, and which are the ones we probably already have in our closets?

1. Jewellery

Oversized and Pearls are the two watch words. In the Fall/winter fashion shows a few months ago, the models were generally wearing either huge hoops - plain or bejewelled - or pearl pieces. Pearls were seen in many different guises: worn across the body, seeded into headdresses. Below: from Gucci.

To capitalise on this trend rummage in your jewellery box and see if you can wear several pearl pieces together. Or splash the cash at one of the cheaper online retailers and buy some huge hoop earrings. Mango usually have a good selection.

2.  Don't wear The Wrong Trousers

Utility or cargo pants / trousers are still going strong for autumn/fall but in more autumnal shades like olive green, brown or stone.

Wide legged trousers show no sign of going away. Slouchy leather is also a trend, but you need to be tall and thin to carry it off.

3. Quiet Luxury

A couple of our blogging friends - Jill at Doused in Pink and Cheryl at Cheryl Shops - have covered this trend recently. Quiet Luxury is all about beautiful fabrics in muted shades with no ostentatious logos. Think cashmere sweaters, double breasted oversized jackets, silk blouses, loafers.

4. Ditch the White Trainers

Yes, you heard that right, and as a devotee of white trainers it pains me to say it, but they are about 5 years out of date. What, you may ask, do the trendy wear instead? Vogue tells us that trendy shoes for the new season include flats with pointy toes;  sturdy wedge shoes;  Mary Janes and thigh high boots which are slouchy rather than tight fitting. I'm also thrilled that Vogue says menswear-inspired loafers and brogues are firmly back in style. Below: Gold Mary-Janes, £95, from Oliver Bonas

5. The Oversized Tank

We used to call them "tank tops" in the 70s. The US calls them vests. For autumn they're more oversized. These knitted tops come in many different styles, plain or patterned, some with sparkle. Below: Nobody's Child crochet top, reduced to £29, John Lewis (I tried this one and it was very long).

6. Daytime Sparkle

Anna Murphy from The Times tell us that sequins and sparkle are back and found in items ranging from the lime sequin top I picked up at M&S to a pale gold sequin jacket at Mint Velvet (£169) or their grey metallic sleeveless top (£69).

I'm wearing a new lime sequinned top from Marks & Spencer in the top pic.  Be quick if you like it, it shines in a sea of murky new season colours!

7. A Handbag?

Anna Murphy tells us that green is all the rage for bags of all sizes. I'm happy with my green vegan leather Fenella Smith London bag, but could also be tempted by one of Sarah Lonergan's colourful multi-way backpacks (£55).

8. A Denim Jacket is this Season's LBD

If you want to appear on point, this is the item to have! The most desirable type is the denim jacket that nips in at the waist, or is belted, preferably in darkest indigo denim. I've been looking for this type of silhouette in deinm jackets for years as the boxy square shape does nothing for me.  Having scoured the Asos site, I see dozens of boxy denim jackets but none, yet, in the desired shape.

9. Red Hair Rules

Tom Smith, International Artist in Residence at Billi Currie, says "The natural progression from soft into stronger coppers is heading into punchier reds, and we're already seeing this clear direction. More acidic tones of candy, rose and cherry are being incorporated into copper hair for the bolder amongst us, and this will grow in popularity throughout autumn and towards the festive season.”

10.  Red Tights

Glamour UK highlights red tights, which were all over the runways, but adds: "There really are no rules here. Red, blue, pink, green, white… we're here for them all."

I find colourful tights at Snag, UK Tights and Tights Tights Tights.

Cobalt Fiore Glossy 70 Opaque Tights, £7.99, from UK Tights.

11. Long black coat

Finally - if you love the drama of a long, sweeping black coat, you should find plenty to choose from. Many of us probably have one stashed away that fits the bill.

I hope you enjoyed the selection of trends for autumn/fall. Any favourites? Do tell in the comments.
