Cord Pinafore 3 Ways

A cord pinafore styled three ways by over 60 style blogger Gail Hanlon from Is This Mutton. Shown here is the pinafore worn with purple

Dear friends. Strange but true: I have never worn dungarees, and the only pinafore dress I had was when I was seven. So I deliberately chose a cute corduroy pinafore dress when Cotton Traders kindly asked me to select two items to style.

It's in navy. which is very versatile, and a good length on me.  You'll need to be fast to grab this dress, at £45:  it's now only available in sizes 14 to 22.

Unfortunately I didn't try it on until the photo session and was surprised to find my usual 10 (US 6) a bit too big, but it was too late to exchange it.  Size down would be my advice.

I decided to style it three different ways, and playing to two key autumn/winter trends.

TREND ONE: LONG BOOTS

The Times confirmed in an article last week that long boots are the trendiest style for AW 22. I have a couple of old pairs and these are my Boden square toed pull-on boots.  They have a similar style this year but with round toes.

I think a polo or turtle neck works particularly well with a pinafore dress because it reduces "clutter" around the neck and bib.

Mine is the silky roll neck from Kettlewell in acid yellow. I adore these because as their name suggests, they're very soft and also quite fine, so perfect to slip under another top and layer up for warmth. Acid yellow is often mistaken for lime, so I've added my lime bag from Cambridge Satchel Company.

Regular readers will know I adore "non boring" hosiery, so my tights are lurexy! I can't remember where I got them as they're a couple of years old.

TREND TWO: OVERSIZED JACKETS

The warmer days of autumn/fall present an opportunity to wear jackets before the need for puffer coats - and lots of influencers have been seen wearing oversized jackets. My lilac jacket came from Asos and adds to a tonal purple look. Purple tights by Gipsy, glittery purple shoes from Supadance London  (they're dance shoes which I had re-soled to wear outdoors). My pansy top is from Kettlewell. I couldn't resist posing in front of my salvia Armistad, which is a beautiful purple and flowers until December.

LOOK THREE

A cord pinafore styled for work with a fuchsia floral blouse and pink ankle boots.

My third look with the pinafore dress is a bright combination that works well for work.  The satin blouse (old) is from M&S, the boots, also a few years old, are from FSJ.  I added navy tights to anchor the navy of the pinafore.

MAKE-UP LOOKS

For each of the three looks I changed my make-up. I don't normally wear eye shadow but here I had a bit of fun.

Far left: for the purple look I used purple eye shadow shades from the Morphe x James Charles palette  (just £26 for 40 colours!). I applied a lighter shade on the lid and a darker purple in an arc over the socket. This is a great trick if you have deep set eyes, like me. Mascara is Legit Lashes in blue from Huda Beauty,  lipstick is Love of My Life by Lisa Eldridge

Centre:  for the yellow look, I used a beautiful gold shade on my lids, perfect for evenings out. It's Liquid Lurex in Daphne by Lisa Eldridge. Lipstick is True Coral by Look Fabulous Forever.

Far right: for the pink blouse outfit, I used pink shades around my eyes from the Morphe palette as above, and a very gorgeous lipstick by Hermes in shade Rose Indien.

Which is your favourite look? What other ways would you have found to style the pinafore? Do let us know in the comments.
