It was my turn this month to choose the challenge for the fearless five of the Style Not Age Challenge. I chose "picnic attire," or "how to dress for a picnic."
The weather has been atrocious for the last week so I was expecting to produce a few ironic photos of me in a rain jacket with an umbrella. Fortunately we had blue skies on Saturday so I snapped a few pictures of me off to a picnic - well, I wish! - with a bottle of Champagne in the basket.
It's not a good idea in the UK to make plans for a picnic or BBQ weeks in advance: you have to seize the moment once the forecast shows a sunny few days ahead.
If a picnic's going to involve some leisurely sports, like throwing a frisbee or playing with a racquet, it's a good idea to wear trouser (pants) or shorts, although I always yearn for a floaty dress and hat as Jacqui is wearing. The two essentials for a picnic are a bag or basket to carry your picnic, book and sun cream, and depending on the forecast, sunglasses and/or an umbrella.
Everything I'm wearing is old: the paperbag trousers were bought in Tesco, the Bowie t-shirt from eBay and the gunmetal wedges are from Vionic (wonderfully spongy and comfortable). My sunglasses are prescription ones from Gucci. I bought the amber necklace in Copenhagen around 25 years ago. I hardly ever wear it, and a couple of hours after the photos the string broke. I've found a small business that re-strings necklaces, so fingers crossed.
My basket was bought from travellers in Germany when I lived there, 20 odd years ago. Finally, the Tilley hat is new - I bought it for when we go to the Lake District walking in a few weeks' time. I love the way it has a secret pocket: you could carry a debit card on your head and no-one would know!
Now let's see what the four other bloggers are planning to wear to their picnics. I love this bright colourful picture from Anna, Anna's Island Style. She's also shopped her wardrobe (closet) and is wearing a paisley top by H&M, plisse trousers by New Look, flowery sandals by Primark and beach bag by Accessorize.
Hilda from Over the Hilda intended to set up a real picnic but it never happened, although she has had several with the grandchildren. I thought about having a picnic with my step granddaughter who has a doll's tea set and wendy house, but we're not to take pictures of her for social media so I couldn't.
Hilda is wearing all F&F from Tesco here except for her trainers. Even the bag and sunglasses are from Tesco, and as Hilda says, they offer excellent value and quality.
As I mentioned earlier, Jacqui from Mummabstylish has the type of picnic outfit I always yearned for: a floaty dress and hat. I remember once wearing a long cream dress and matching hat to the beach where I felt very conspicuous!
Finally Emma from Stylesplash is also looking very colourful in her gingham skirt and top from Zara a few years ago, chosen because they remind her of a picnic blanket. All I can say is, it's a very glamorous blanket. Mine is a classic tartan! Her shoes are from TKMaxx and the bag is M&S but bought on eBay, It's perfect for holidays because it's reversible with silver on the other side.
I hope we inspired you with our picnic outfits. We'll be back in a month with another challenge. I'm here on Wednesday with the #WowOnWednesday link-up. See you then!
