First Cut Since Lockdown

Over 50s blogger Gail Hanlon gets an up-to-date hair makeover following lockdown

What a difference a new haircut and colour makes.  On Monday I had a day off work to spend a pleasurable four hours catching up with Jodie. After a full head of highlights and permanent base was applied, followed by a pale pink glaze, my hair was cut quite a bit shorter.

It looked as if I'd lost 10 years overnight as the cut suddenly lifted my face and gave me a more playful gamine look.

Keen to avoid the frumpy look with bobbed highlighted hair, Is This Mutton's Gail Hanlon has gone for a gamine chop with texture

When I got home, wearing new sunglasses, the cat gaped at me as if she hardly recognised me. I had planned to take some pictures of a new dress - yes I succumbed, as M&S have had a magnificent drop of dresses and blouses - but the sunshine was playing havoc with photography as you can see above. So those photos will have to wait until next week's post.

I think we're all a bit more relaxed about our hair following successive lockdowns. In my poll on Instagram, it was roughly 50% each way for those who had had their hair done and those who haven't. I've never gone so long without having my roots touched up - see the "before" below - it was November when they were last done.

I had considered not having the base colour applied this time but my hair is still quite dark at the back of my head and only going grey at the front, so it's too soon yet.

Now my challenge is replicating the way Jodie blow dried it. She used a vent brush and brushed the hair vigorously against the direction in which it grows to create volume.  Normally when I apply any products I do so very timidly, but she took some clay and whooshed it all over my hair when dry, and then worked it in to create some texture.  This will need some practice I fear.

Meanwhile a new avenue of pleasure has been opened up:  earrings! I have learnt the hard way that heavy dangly earrings don't suit me, but I like studs - pearls or white gold - and preferably two in each lobe. Now that my ears are on show, I shall stock up!

Have you had your locks tended to after months of neglect? And did you go for something new or different?  Do let us know in the comments.

I've linked up a couple of my previous hair posts in the link-up including my gallery of different looks throughout the decades - permed, dyed, bobbed, short, hair extensions....

Last Week's Favourites - Most Clicked

Amy from Amy's Creative Pursuits with her post "April Stylish Monday - Everyday Luxe." Amy put together an outfit for wearing at home that was both comfortable and made her feel good.

Another post that was popular was Shelbee's The Good Buy / Goodbye Book featuring this month Florals. It was a visual feast to see so many different florals in bright and dark hues.

I've started recently to wear a lot more scarves, but only "easy" ones like infinity scarves and those with a button fastening. So my favourite post from last week is from Sally at Within a World of My Own, and her post 6 Scarves 2021: March Additions, #2 Navy & Beige, Darcy  This is a great read if you like to have an analytical approach to your wardrobe building. I have always tended to go by gut instinct, and what I think suits me, but it doesn't always work as the numerous bags of clothes waiting to go to charity shops will testify!
