This challenge from Emma flummoxed me for a while. I was probably too sidetracked by the word "gothic" which to me implies Halloween style make-up, corsets and black lace.
I was most concerned about my hair letting the side down. I can't think of any self-respecting goths or Halloween witches with a highlighted bob. But while I was food shopping in Tesco, I snapped up a witch's wig for just three pounds. It's not the best quality, but at least conceals the hair.
I should probably have ditched the beanie. Would a goth, even a romantic one, wear a beanie?
The blouse I picked up on eBay from an emporium specializing in gothic. I love the button detail. I wore the lace covered skirt, also from ebay,
in a challenge a while ago and enjoyed the chance to wear it again.
The boots are from John Lewis.
Doing the make-up was fun. I used the Byredo Colour Stick in Purple Stinger as a lipstick and used a purple eyshadow and Eye of Horus amethyst eyeliner pencil around my eyes. The mascara is a new one that I'm really pleased with. You may not have heard of the brand,
Rumi Cosmetiques. The mascara is called VolumeCare+ and it has ingredients to help sparse eyelashes grow stronger. As a mascara it's very good, it gives good length and definition, and doesn't smudge after a full day's work. I bought it myself (plus one for Mum).
Now let's see how my blogger friends got on with Gothic Romance. Hilda from Over the Hilda has struck the right balance between gothic and romance with her gorgeous dress. I was also planning a cemetery shoot but Hilda pipped me to the post. She bought the dress in a local boutique years ago but has never worn it. Her boots are current, from Penneys/Primark.
Anna from
Anna's Island Style was also, like me, less keen on this challenge because it's a style so far removed from our own. Anna, as you know, is renowned for her bright colours and prints. But I think she looks great in this dreamy green dress.
Jacqui from
Mummabstylish looks great in Gothic Romance. The necklace and leather jacket from Wallis via ebay adds a Goth vibe to her chiffon and faux leather dress from ebay. Her Lotus boots add some sparkly red highlights.
Finally Emma from
Stylesplash, who set this month's challenge. She looks seriously cool in her black maxi dress by Second Female, black boots with pearl embellishments by Zara but bought on eBay, and lace headband from Asos.
Hope you enjoyed our interpretations. If you need a witch for Halloween, I'm open to offers. You can see more photos from Emma, Jacqui, Hilda and Anna on their blogs.
