All Dressed Up and Nowhere To Go: Style Not Age Challenge

Is This Mutton's Gail Hanlon in office chic: what she used to wear to meet the ad agency. Max Mara jacket, Vivienne Westward skirt, black boots and cream pearl collar top

It's the last Monday of the month and time for September's Style Not Age Challenge, set by Jacqui with the theme All Dressed Up and Nowhere To Go.  My days of dressing up, even with somewhere to go, are behind me so I  played with the theme as "All dressed up and no office to go to."

My outfit is a nostalgic homage to the type of power outfits we used to wear.  Now, if women want to dress to impress at work, the tailoring is softer;  the colours brighter  (pastel pinks, greens, anything goes) and there are plenty of pussy bow blouses and trainers.

At my previous company I had at least one day a week in London meeting our agencies, the top ad and PR agencies of their day, and to give myself confidence I'd wear my Max Mara jacket  (picked up for around £10 in a House of Fraser sale!), Vivienne Westward skirt formerly owned by Carol Vorderman, which I bought on the secondhand site HEWI  (Hardly Ever Worn It) and black boots.

The outfit is still wearable because the belt over jacket look is very big for AW 20/21  (the chunkier the belt the better). Plus the boots are new so the latest style, somewhere in between a pointed and square toe, with chunky low heels and side button details.  I added a lace collar top (old, from Ted Baker), a spider brooch (Etsy) and a patent briefcase I've had for years, which came from Marks and Spencer.

I haven't been to the office since February, because of the pandemic, and we're working from home until further notice.  So my outfit won't be getting any outing any time soon!

What was your favourite power dressing outfit at work?  Do tell in the comments.

Let's see what my blogging friends chose.  Anna from Anna's Island Style has literally nowhere to go as she poses on a deserted sand bar in the Isles of Scilly, where she lives. I'm seriously in love with Anna's mermaid coat, which came from Topshop. Her dress is from Monsoon.

Jacqui from Mummabstylish, whose challenge this is, hasn't worn this stunning  pink Jacques Vert lace dress very often, but I'm sure you'll agree it deserves its place in the sun. Jacqui has matched the flattering grey liner beautifully with pewter accessories.

Emma from Style Splash has chosen bright colours yellow and red for impact. The yellow lace dress by Paper Dolls was originally bought two years ago with a wedding in mind. On that occasion she wore something in red instead. Her sandals are from Hobbs (bought on eBay) and the bag is from Zara.

Hilda from Over the Hilda is wearing a gorgeous dress from LK Bennett, several years old, and a jacket from the Zara sale 2 years ago. The dress has never worn: Hilda was saving it for a wedding or day at the races. Glad to see this lovely dress get a virtual outing.
