Remembering Your First Bra - and Link Up

In my pre-New Year post I talked about how I was going to approach blogging this year and how I  would work with fewer brands and choose them very carefully. Like most of us I adore lovely lingerie and I have a soft spot for brands that have been around for many years, with a strong heritage. So I was thrilled when Playtex got in touch.
I'm sure you all remember the first ever bra you had.  It was such a significant milestone.  I had been nagging my mum for ages but she was very resistant. In the end, I went into British Home Stores with my friend Jill and bought a blue and white floral bra, size 32AAA.

I had no idea what size I was, and wasn't measured. It wasn't the right size at all, but I was thrilled with it.  Mum then saw sense and bought me two more in M&S, size 34A  (still wasn't measured). At the time, patterned floral bras were all the rage.

What's particularly fascinating about bras is that their history is inextricably intertwined with the social history of the status of women.  At this point in time we have moved away from the "push em up and push em together" bras with heavy padding and under wiring, and soft bras like bralets have become popular.

Playtex has been around since 1932, then known as the International Latex Corporation. ILC entered  the women’s underwear sector with the innovative Living Girdle, an indestructible girdle that was resistant to holes and snags.

In 1947 the company split into four divisions and Playtex was formed, a fusion of the words Play and Latex. In 1954 the iconic Cross Your Heart bra was launched with the slogan ‘Lifts and Separates’. In 1955, it is the first brand to dare to mention lingerie on TV.
Playtex has continued to innovate and I'm wearing the Invisible Elegance  balconette bra and midi knickers in antique white.  The bra is is very pretty with lace covered straps and sits perfectly: the band doesn't ride up and the straps don't have to be mercilessly tightened for uplift.

I love to wear matching bra and briefs and while lace is gorgeous, it puts me off when the lace is visible through clothes, particularly silk blouses or t-shirts.  This isn't a problem with the Invisible Elegance lace.

Disclosure: I was gifted with a set of lingerie by Playtex. Copy approval was not sought or given, and I accepted the gift because I would happily choose to buy Playtex's lingerie.

Now it's time for our weekly fix of glamour and fashion know-how with #WowOnWednesday.

Last week's most clicked  post was by Michelle at Fifty and Fab: A New Year, A New Decade, Welcome to 2020.  Michelle, like many of us, has been thinking hard about her blog and what she wants to achieve this year.

My favourite post was by Midlife and Beyond: Casual Glamour Without the Fuss. I'm all in favour of that approach. Here's Alison looking effortlessly glamorous in a shearling coat and satin skirt.

Well done to Michelle andAlison.

  1. I think my first bra was from M&S. In fact I've recently seen 2 beautiful bras with matching knickers in there. I'm planning to buy one soon and it will be in an early Spring post.
