Recent Outfits

Style blogger Gail Hanlon from Is This Mutton in red sequin top, asymmetric plaid skirt and red and black boots

This week is a round-up of recent outfits I've been wearing, smart, casual and work wear. First up: the outfit that didn't make it.

I'd planned to wear this red sequin top with asymmetric skirt and red/black boots on my birthday. We were going to the Tutankhamun exhibition in London followed by Dinner by Heston. But just before we were due to leave, I took some photos and decided I didn't want to wear it. Do you ever do this? I don't as a rule, but I then had to change in a hurry.

I mentioned the red sequin top a couple of weeks ago - it was out of of stock in Next but I kept a beady eye on it and snapped it up online when it was restocked.

So what did I end up wearing? A silver sequin top I bought in the summer, my long burgundy skirt (Hope sale) and burgundy cashmere cardigan. I even had to switch my jewellery from rose gold to silver, and why? All because I thought I would need a cardigan in the cold weather and my black cropped cashmere cardigan is a bit short and rides up. I didn't have time to take new photos but here's one from the restaurant.

At weekends I used to wear terrible old fleeces from our hiking expeditions with leggings or shabby jeans, but lately I've upped the ante by buying a few t-shirts and some better fleeces. This one, from local company Yoga Leggs, caught my eye because it's in my favourite lilac colour and goes perfectly with my lilac brogues.

Another look I like at weekends is a statement jumper with jeans.  This is the black version of my pink Bowie flash jumper from Orwell + Austin.

I'm wearing my poppy brooch: every year I buy a different one. This was a special edition for last year commemorating women of the First World War. It came back in stock in January so I bought two, one for me and one for my mum.  Each box had the name of a different woman and her role. For US readers, we wear poppies at this time of the year to respect the lives lost in conflicts. It all culminates on Remembrance Day when there are services across the UK.  Canada also marks this anniversary.

I very much like the look of white and winter white in winter. It seems indulgent and luxe somehow, but has to be down from head to foot in my view.  Here's my take for autumn. This I wore on a girly outing.

The trousers are old, from Marks and Spencer;  the boots are last year's and the cardigan was in my Stitch Fix box a few months ago, from Oasis. Plus my signature pearls, two necklaces layered up.

Finally, a couple of work wear outfits. A black skirt and black trousers is a staple for me in autumn/winter and every year I buy a new version to make sure it looks up-to-date. This asymmetric skirt is very good quality in a heavy crepe material. I'm wearing it with the infamous short cropped cashmere cardigan mentioned earlier.

One of my birthday presents was this long sleeved cashmere cardigan in a lovely fresh green. Here I'm wearing it with my Boden Becky skirt, hot chillies blouse from The Bias Cut (sold  out) and green snakeskin boots.

My favourite was Sherry from Just Live Joy with her post, Being Thankful Is Always In Style.  We live in troubled times and sometimes we get bogged down in it all. Sherry's post reminds me that I should be thankful for many things, including good health.  Sherry's wearing a Thankful t-shirt which is perfect for Thanksgiving.
