Three ways with a camel midi skirt

Take a midi length A line camel skirt and create three different looks. Voila! Over 40s blog Is This Mutton? takes the supremely soft supima skirt from Marks and Spencer and tries it with lilac and cream and black for the office.

Now the word "camel" as a descriptor doesn't exactly get my heart beating faster.  I know it's an eminently sensible colour and every woman is urged to have a camel coat for winter.  But I'd never thought of having anything else in camel until I saw this midi skirt in Marks and Spencer.

Camel is a great neutral that partners well with nearly every colour. I created three different looks simply by ringing the changes with tops and accessories.

I love a statement piece of jewellery, which could be earrings or a necklace, but not both. In the first look I'm wearing an ivory M&S Autograph silk shirt - another very versatile item - with my signature chunky pearls and leopard print shoes and bag.

The skirt has an elasticated waist and comes up big: I should have gone for the size down but I'm too impatient to send things back for a different size. So adding a belt made it look better for me. The kitten heels (Vionic) and clutch bag (Next) are both from a previous season but are great as neutrals with many outfits.

Lilac and white are next, with statement earrings. I outed myself as a lover of lilac a few months ago and picked up two tops in M&S last week, both lilac. I haven't worn the Next earrings very much but they go well with this top. I used my favourite accessories from last summer, white 40s style sandals with clear perspex heels, and white bow clutch bag.

The final look features gold and cream with a pop of red. It's an M&S cream top with brown frill detail on the sleeve and an M&S statement necklace  (you'd think I'd been sponsored by them - sadly not!).

A tip with wearing the new shape midi skirt is to wear something short on top. So no long jackets or cardigans, as we did in the 80s.

Which was your favourite look?  Mr Mutton, returning from his 45 mile bike ride, gave the thumbs up to the white silk shirt and leopard print combo, saying "one of your better outfits."  (Speaks volumes, doesn't it?).

I was gifted the Vionic leopard print kitten heels and Ainsleigh wedge sandals (above).

  1. I'm with cheeky Mr M, Gail, I love the classic look, almost a bit Audrey Hepburn, a bit of a classic film star vibe going on. But they're all great looks.
Hugs, go have yourself a great week, x.

  5. I love that skirt on you. Very nice indeed. It's similar to one I bought from M&S in Gibraltar. The only flaw with that colour is that it shows up any little tiny stain - which happened to my skirt. I've washed it with that stuff that's meant to get stains out and it's waiting to be ironed and fingers crossed that it's OK.

You look good in all those combos - as ever the shoes.... But actually I love that splash of red - that's a lovely ittle bag.

    1. I know what you mean about the colour and stains. Mr Mutton has a pair of shorts in this shade and I've made 2 attempts so far to get an olive oil stain out!
