The new midi dress

The new look for summer dresses is unstructured, flowing and midi length with contrasting patterns or unsugary florals. Is This Mutton? looks at this trend for the fashionable over-40 woman
I absolutely love this Teatum Jones dress - the silky fabric, the swooshy hem, the contrast prints. But unfortunately it's a shape that doesn't suit me.

As Mr Mutton put it  (and you can always rely on men for an honest opinion), "it would look better on a slimmer body."

It's the shape of dress which suits a straight up-and-down figure.  As you can see, I did try a belt with it but you lose a lot of the casual, boho vibe when you add too many accessories to this look.

Over 45s blog Is This Mutton? tries the new shape of unstructured contrast print midi dress

I love this new style of midi. This contemporary style is breathing fresh of air into the high street. I should still be able to wear this trend by choosing a shirt dress or wrap dress style.  Plenty to see below in the shopping guide. Zara has lots to choose from too.

  1. My dear Gail, I think you look lovely in this and seems to me that it does, suit your shape. But of course you know your body better than anyone so the decision is all yours. Mr M got me giggling. He and TP must NEVER get together! Hugs, my floral fantasia, x.

    1. Mr M thinks the photos look better than the reality did! He has a point - we bloggers learn how to position ourselves for the most flattering photo! I saw today that the same print(s) are now available in a skirt, so I may well get that instead!

  2. I like the print of this dress and I think it looks on good on you. But you need to be happy with it! If my hubby were to dress me, he would put me in body con dresses and throw out all of my clothes! Lol But I am not a body con dress. I love to be able to move freely and not be restricted so I choose my clothes that isn't tight and I am a lot happier for it. You should go with how you feel wearing this dress. I do really think it looks marvelous!

  4. I am pleased the floaty style is back in fashion again, I bought a layered hem dress recently and have already worn it a few times. It feels so comfortable. Love those red sandals!

  5. But you are slim! I love a asymmetrical line and the contrasts are fabulous. But did you keep it then?

    1. I did send it back Nancy. Not so much because of what my husband thinks but also because it's an expensive dress and I probably wouldn't wear it very much.

  6. I like the dress on you Gail but obviously you are not happy with it. Why donk you find someone that could maybe make it into a wrap style? I bet it can be done. The material mix is gorgeous xx

  7. I love the colors and it's such a gorgeous print. And no disrespect to your hubby, but how boring to see it on a thinner body. No curves means no interest!! So I vote for keeping it!!!

  10. That dress is a beautiful design but the problem is not your body... it's the fact the dress is not fitted to it!
Anything that hangs from the bust is difficult on any body size or shape.
Having to belt (or whatever) means the dress is wrong NOT you.
I hope the skirt is better because the colours are fabulous on you!!
