Quirky Shoes

Image showing three different Poetic Licence shoes and the box they come in

A post I did recently on Instagram showing my latest pair of Poetic Licence shoes received lots of likes, so here's a longer post about my love for quirky footwear.

I first wrote about Poetic Licence shoes back in 2013, but sadly those shoes went to the charity shop because they were too high for me to walk in.

I always thought it strange when my mum and ladies of her vintage used to say, a few years ago, that they couldn't wear high heels any longer.  I thought surely it's just a case of putting one foot in front of the other. But now I get it.

But just because my shoes have smaller, block heels  (or no heels) doesn't mean I can't have fun with shoes. I love decorated shoes with perspex heels (like my latest acquisition above) and ribbons. Poetic Licence, Irregular Choice and RubyShoo are the brands to look for, and they're not too pricey either. Below: three pairs of Poetic Licence shoes and my hounds tooth brogues by Banned, from Amazon.

So how do I wear them? They look great with monochrome outfits and bright colours. They have such striking patterns that I wouldn't be tempted to pattern mix with them. These shoes make a statement.  A few weeks ago I bought a red Bombshell dress and couldn't decide what shoes to wear with them. Black is too predictable. Beige is a bit Middleton. Red would have been good, provided it was exactly the same red. Then I found my Shake It shoes by Poetic Licence which have red cherries in the design. Perfect. See my post where I paired them with the dress.

For my new Corporate Beauty brogues, above, which are a bit glittery with perspex heels, I've paired them with a red cardigan from Asos and a white frilled sleeve shirt and black skirt.

You can see the hounds tooth brogues here and here.  I'm wearing the blue Shake It shoes here.

Can't resist a gold boot

I also love metallic shoes and boots. I treat metallics as a neutral and my pewter brogues from Next have been real faves this winter.

I always make sure I have a pair of gold and silver ankle boots. They jazz up jeans but they also lend a bit of je ne sais quoi to black trousers and a black jacket. Here's one of my favourite looks featuring gold ankle boots. These were from Office.

I tend to buy my Poetic Licence shoes from Amazon - they're a bit cheaper there. I've now got my eye on another pair with cherries, aptly called Cherry Fizz.

Come back on Thurs to have a rummage in my make-up bag.

  1. Oh, how I have admired Poetic License shoes and booties from afar. I visit them online about once a month and have pinned many pairs on my Glass Slippers Pinterest board. You have inspired me to beat back that little voice that tells me I am almost 60 (true) and a grandmother (also true) and a retired LIBRARIAN for heaven sake, and just buy a pair!!! Love the subtle pattern mixing between your shoes and the tights. I rarely wear monochromatic outfits or color blocking so maybe having a pair of these adorable shoes will also help me embrace both.
As always, look you fashionably fabulous.

  3. My daughter had a huge crush on Irregular choice shoes a few years back and wouldn't wear anything else. They are all showstoppers for sure, like art on your feet. I like the dogtooth one's you have Gail. I'm still wearing my heels for as long as possible! xx

  4. Those Cherry Fizz you have your eye on are also so stylish and cute! Would you consider a pale pink metallic a neutral too? I have acquired such a mule in anticipation of spring. Lise
