A cosy combo for cold days

Image showing an over 50s woman in black and white check coat and red accessories for winter 2017 on a chilly day in the garden.
ow where did I put those gloves?
Winter for the Met Office starts on 1 December. Ahead: chapped lips, travel plans occasionally ruined by the wrong type of snow; the festival of over-consumption that now starts on the US import Black Friday and runs to the New Year; howling winds, darkness when setting off for work (allowing extra time to scrape ice off the car) and darkness when returning.
You can see I love winter. (Not!).

The only thing that keeps me going is the thought of seeing those brave little shoots in January as snowdrops start the succession of bulbs igniting all over the garden. Plus the occasional blue sky cold day.

Remembering the words of the great Alfred Wainwright, there is never the wrong weather, only the wrong clothes. So I'm showing you a new coat and a chunky jumper, plus scarf and gloves, that should see off the first chilly days.

I got the coat a couple of months ago when winter stock started to arrive. I wanted to tap into the Prince of Wales check / tweedy trend. This coat has poppers instead of buttons - much easier for cold fingers. I thought red would add a suitably colourful contrast (I'm not going to say "festive" - please, it's still not December yet). Any excuse to get out my fabulous Lotus booties!

The big bowl behind me is full of crocus bulbs. I plant a lot of bulbs!
The jumper is a big fluffy one with green, pink and red stripes. It would make me look huge if I didn't belt it (remember that old tip ladies). It looks good with the other accessories because of the red stripe.

Look who turned up towards the end of the shoot - Mr Mutton, fresh from a six mile run. He's also looking cosy but in the type of cold weather kit that Mr Wainwright would approve of.

  1. Ooh, that scarf is a lovely colour and as for the boots - they're amazing! That's a really great outfit although it's so cold today I'd be asking, 'now where's my hat!' Anyway, I'definitely going to look for a red scarf like yours - it looks so cozy and warm!

  3. The minute I saw that pop of red I knew we'd be seeing these fabulous boots again Gail. And why not? I love them too and can understand this styling today. I've not bought anything new in this Prince of Wales check, but do like it. I did find a lovely checked trenchcoat recently which will be cropping up on the blog soon...
