Amazing Lace: 5 Over 50 Challenge

Gail Hanlon from Is This Mutton adding a gothic vibe to lace in a black skirt, fascinator and belted jacket
This month five intrepid bloggers over the age of 50 are all rocking "Amazing Lace", the challenge set by Jacqui at Mummabstylish. I knew immediately I wanted to do something different with lace. A little Gothic maybe, or a little Madonna circa Desperately Seeking Susan.
I set about acquiring the different outfit elements, starting with the black lace skirt which has tabs to allow you to alter the length. The black fascinator has netting and an interesting skull motif. The cream lace blouse is a romantic, pretty piece which makes a pleasing juxtaposition against the severe black. Finally I added black lace gloves for my Madonna touch, my old black pointy ankle boots and old MaxMara black jacket. The green cross-the-body is a new acquisition.

The 5 Over 50 Challenge Amazing Lace interpreted by Is This Mutton

Gail Hanlon from Is This Mutton chose a Gothic inspired fascinator and black lace skirt for the challenge Amazing Lace

Mr Mutton's comment on the outfit was "I wouldn't want to go out with you dressed like that" and "I don't see why you can't smile in the pictures." which is something he always says.  (Try showing husbands pictures in Vogue where they NEVER smile!).

Over The Hilda blogger Hilda Smith in a dramatic black lace dress from LK Bennett
A big welcome to Hilda Smith from Over The Hilda. Irish blogger Hilda is the latest addition to the team, replacing Ashley from Daisy Jones Style who has gone on to new challenges. How glamorous does Hilda look in this LK Bennett dress and dramatic black heels?

Here's Jacqui from Mummabstylish who set the challenge, also choosing black lace which is great for transitioning from summer to autumn and can be dressed up in many ways.
The 5 Over 50 Challenge Amazing Lace gathered some amazing interpretations including this black lace dress and high heels from Mummabstylish

Anna Parkes from Annas Island Style in the 5 Over 50 Challenge Amazing Lace
We're very proud of Anna from Anna's Island Style because she featured on Johnnie Walker's Sounds of the 70s on BBC Radio 2 yesterday and did a fantastic job ( (available on the BBC iPlayer for UK readers). Anna has chosen a fresh and pretty lace look with a pink embellished top and cream lace skirt.

I always love the detail of the accessories that Anna adds. And another marvellous pair of vertiginous heels.
Laurie Bronze from Vanity and Me in black lace top and elegant black tailored trousersFinally Laurie from Vanity and Me takes us "Back to Black" but in the most stylish and sexy way.

I love the way she has styled crisp, smart black trousers with a sheer black lace body that gives a tantalizing glimpse of flesh (although she is wearing underwear, I hasten to add!).

All our outfits are featured on a Pinterest board here, plus the previous challenges.

    1. I thought it would be the hardest because I only had 1 lace item (a pale blue skirt) that I don't like very much! I tend to associate lace with weddings and find it a bit scratchy. So that's why I came up with my "fancy dress" option!

  9. This is such fun Gail. You sound like you enjoyed it even if you weren't smiling. We know the lack of smile is for dramatic effect. You need a Mr D'Arcy not a Mr Mutton. Actually D'Arcy didn't smile much .

  10. I love this-that is quite a skirt, with those straps it reminds me of steam-punk for some reason. The belt on the jacket is super, well there's just nothing I don't love about this. And you thrifted the jacket-that is so neat. I don't know if you do linkups, but I have my September 2nd loved going on now and this would be so perfect. If you don't want to, that fine but here is the link in case you would be inclined. Again, love this! http://www.inlinkz.com/new/view.php?id=735108

I need to find someone in my neck of the wood to do something like this, it sounds like so much fun.

    1. Also gave me a little anxiety as I take all my photos on my own with a tripod, and was a bit nervous in the cemetery lest someone tell me to leave! But it was certainly fun gathering all the items and surprising everyone.

  17. I'm delighted to be home and back online again Gail, and must say thank you so much for the extra shout out about my radio debut. I love the dramatic way you tackled Amazing Lace which really did live up to its name. You've really raised the bar here, well done!

I have the hat in place for next month, but am without direction as to what to wear it with - wish me luck!
